  • You will meet new people.

Intake Process

Step 1: Review our Volunteer Opportunities
Review volunteering options and rank your top choices on the application

Download Volunteer Application Form .

Step 2: Submit Application
Prospective volunteers must submit an application via mail to the Highland Campus address (ACMC—Highland Campus, 1411 E. 31st Street, Oakland CA 94602) and can expect to hear back from the volunteer office within two weeks after submission.

Step 3: Interviews
Once your application is received we will contact you to setup an interview to determine acceptance into the volunteer program. You may go through additional interviews depending on the department.

Step 4: Orientation
Once accepted as a volunteer you will be invited to a mandatory (4) four-hour volunteer orientation held about once a month.

Step 5: Health Screening
There is certain health information we must obtain from you that is required of anyone who volunteers/works at the ACMC medical centers. You will be able to set up an appointment with ACMC Employee Health Services only after attending an orientation.

Volunteer Health Screening Guidelines/Information
Volunteers at Alameda County Medical Center must fulfill the following health requirements prior to any volunteer work:

  • Documentation of two negative tuberculosis (TB)/PPD performed elsewhere within the last 12 months. ACMC will provide the second PPD, if necessary, though please be aware that this may slow down your volunteer start date.
  • For anyone with a history of a positive PPD/TB reading, we will accept a chest x-ray within 12 months. A chest x-ray may be obtained at your primary care provider’s office.
  • Proof of immunity to Mumps, Rubella, Rubeola and Varicella (by immunization record or titer documentation).
Step 6: Background Investigation
Volunteers need to submit to a background investigation before beginning volunteering. A form authorizing consent to perform a background investigation will be provided upon being accepted to volunteer. Patient care areas/departments are subject to a (2) months probationary period in a non-patient care area/department.

After completing these (6) six steps you are clear to start volunteering subject to the requirements of the individual department.

Important Guidelines for Volunteering at ACMC

I.D. Badge
Human Resources will only issue the identification badge after completing all the above listed steps. Always wear your picture I.D. badge while you are volunteering on any ACMC campus. It is necessary that volunteers return the badge to the Volunteer Office upon the end of their volunteer service.

Uniform & Appearance
Volunteers are to purchase a uniform if placed in a patient care area/department. All others are required to dress in business casuals. We suggest that you wear low heeled, comfortable shoes or athletic shoes. No open toed shoes please. Volunteers may not smoke or chew gum in the hospital while on duty.

Assignments
As a volunteer, you are directly responsible to the department to which you have been assigned. Sometimes a change of assignment is necessary, either for your convenience or to meet the changing demands of the hospital. Please do not change assignments unless you have made arrangements to do so with the Volunteer Office.

Training
All volunteers are required to participate in a volunteer orientation program. This includes a (4) four-hour general hospital orientation conducted by the Volunteer Program Manager. A departmental orientation/training is provided by the hospital staff and or by lead volunteers.

Attendance
Volunteers are a vital part of ACMC and we count on you being here when you're scheduled. Therefore, if you are unable to be here or running late on your scheduled day, please notify your manager & the Volunteer Program Office as soon as possible. If you plan to take a vacation, please notify your manager and the Volunteer Office as soon as you know the dates that you will be away.

Time-keeping
Be sure to sign in when you arrive and sign out when you leave. Sign-in sheets are used to record your volunteer hours and attendance. Please verify your hours monthly. Further instructions will be provided at the orientation.

Donations
The volunteer program is always accepting donations including clothing (men’s clothing and shoes especially) magazines, books, and toiletries. (Please call or e-mail for details).

Parking
Volunteers receive free off site parking that includes shuttle service to and from off site lot Monday–Friday, 6am–8pm.

Bart Shuttle
ACMC offers a free shuttle to and from the Lake Merritt BART Station & Highland. It arrives every ten minutes Mon. – Fri. 6am through 8pm excluding holidays and weekends. Catch it to the ACMC-Highland Campus at the BART station parking lot on the 8th street side across from Laney College to the small parking lot in front of the main entrance to Highland.

Volunteer Meals

Terminations of Service
Your volunteer service may be discontinued if you are frequently absent, have unannounced absences, or do not comply with ACMC policies & procedures or volunteer rules & regulations. If you decide to discontinue your volunteer work or require a leave of absence, please inform the Volunteer Office as far in advance as possible and make arrangements to return your badge and uniform.
